Dodoma set to become Tanzania’s critical minerals processing hub

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader economic transformation agenda under the National Flagship Programmes (NFP), which are scheduled for implementation in the coming financial year.

DODOMA: THE government is finalising plans for the establishment of a large-scale, cloud-connected industrial complex for the processing and refining of critical minerals in the heart of the country.

The ambitious project, expected to commence in the next fiscal year, will see strategic minerals such as nickel, cobalt and lithium processed at the envisaged Nala Mineral Processing Hub, located on the outskirts of Dodoma.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader economic transformation agenda under the National Flagship Programmes (NFP), which are scheduled for implementation in the coming financial year.

Speaking to the publication in an exclusive interview yesterday, Deputy Minister in the President’s Office for Planning and Investment, Dr. Pius Stephen Chaya, said the government has already secured a large tract of land in the Nala area for the development of the mineral processing hub.

“The envisaged investment is expected to play a significant role in stimulating economic growth in Tanzania’s capital city and the country at large,” he said.

Dr Chaya noted that the government plans to install modern infrastructure and essential services at the site to ensure smooth operations of the multi-billion-dollar facility.

“As part of the implementation strategy, the government will develop the area with state-of-the-art infrastructure aimed at attracting both local and foreign investors to establish industries and related investments,” he explained.

In addition to mineral refining, the project is also expected to pave the way for the establishment of modern factories for the production of electronic appliances and related technologies.

“This initiative will create opportunities for investors interested in setting up electronics manufacturing industries,” he added.

Dr Chaya further revealed that, under the National Flagship Programmes, at least seven major projects of different scales and sectors are expected to be launched in various regions across the country.

He also disclosed that the government intends to establish industrial parks in every district nationwide as part of broader efforts to accelerate industrialisation and strengthen the national economy.

According to Dr Chaya, implementation of these strategic projects is aligned with the country’s Development Vision 2050, which seeks to unlock Tanzania’s vast economic potential and propel the nation towards achieving a 1 trillion US dollar economy by the year 2050.
