DODOMA. THE Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Mr. Shigeki Komatsubara has urged Tanzania to adopt a holistic approach to structural transformation and maintain focus on long-term development goals.
Mr. Komatsubara made the remarks during a special audience with the Executive Secretary (ES) of the National Planning Commission (NPC), Dr. Fred Msemwa.
Mr. Komatsubara emphasized the importance of the NPC’s role in driving Tanzania’s development, citing Japan’s experience in implementing national visions to build an equitable and inclusive economy. “Happiness and well-being are essential for every citizen,” he said.
UNDP AND NPC TO WORK TOGETHER ON DIRA 2050
The meeting, held on December 11, 2025, at the NPC Headquarters in Dodoma, mapped out ways for UNDP and NPC to work together in implementing the National Development Vision 2050, popularly known as DIRA 2050.
Dr. Msemwa highlighted the need for innovative financing mechanisms, such as venture capital, strengthened startup ecosystems, and enhanced private-sector participation to drive Tanzania’s inclusive economic transformation.
GOVERNMENT COMMITTED TO POLICY AND STRUCTURAL REFORMS
Dr. Fred Msemwa noted that the government is undertaking fundamental policy and structural reforms to remove barriers to the implementation of DIRA 2050, aimed at steering the nation toward a USD 1 trillion economy by 2050.
The NPC Chief Boss unveiled several priority sectors, including agriculture, tourism, sports, logistics, mining, and energy, which have been strategically selected to accelerate economic transformation and generate substantial employment opportunities, particularly for young people
The National Planning Commission was established under the National Planning Commission Act, Cap 127, to coordinate economic management, development planning, and the implementation of approved development plans. The Commission is responsible for formulating long-term, medium-term, and short-term national development plans, monitoring the implementation of development plans, and preparing the National Development Vision.
However, the UNDP is committed to supporting Tanzania’s development efforts and looks forward to working with the NPC and other stakeholders to achieve the country’s development goals.
