DODOMA: THE  Dodoma regional government has launched a strategic project to construct modern, large-scale sewage stabilization ponds, aimed at addressing the city’s expanding wastewater management needs.

To gobble up to 178bn/- upon completion, the project is being overseen by the Dodoma Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (DUWASA).

It involves the installation of advanced wastewater treatment ponds between Nzuguni and Ipagala wards in Dodoma City.

Mr. Gombo Dotto, Chairman of Dodoma’s City Planning and Environment Standing Committee, revealed the plans in an interview, explaining that the initiative will replace the aging Swaswa sewage ponds, which are no longer able to cope with the city’s rapid population growth.

“Dodoma continues to welcome new residents daily, leading to sewage production that exceeds the capacity of the existing Swaswa wastewater treatment ponds,” he said.

He added that the new facility will be constructed to high professional and environmental standards, ensuring hygiene and safety for nearby communities.

“At the deteriorated Swaswa ponds, contaminated water has occasionally overflowed into surrounding areas because the facility is overstretched,” he noted.

He assured that the modern design of the new ponds will effectively resolve the capital’s wastewater management challenges.

In addition to the sewage project, he highlighted DUWASA’s efforts to improve clean water access in line with population growth.

Initiatives include drilling productive water wells in areas such as Nzuguni, Bihawana, Zuzu, and Iyumbu, which will expand reliable water supply across the city and reduce shortages for residents.

The combined projects reflect Dodoma’s commitment to upgrading urban infrastructure to support sustainable development and public health.
