Digital systems prioritised for cooperative societies in Tanzania

Summary

The adoption of digital systems would improve operational efficiency, enhance security and increase transparency in cooperative activities, while also helping to address fraud-related challenges that have emerged in some areas.

MWANZA: The use of digital systems among cooperative societies across Tanzania has been identified as a key priority in strengthening transparency, efficiency and accountability while minimising the risk of fraud within the sector.

The remarks were made by the Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies in Mwanza Region, Ms Hilda Boniphace, who said the Cooperative Development Commission (CDC) continues to encourage cooperative societies nationwide to embrace modern digital technologies.

She made the statement on May 28, 2026, during the opening of the Mwanza Regional Cooperative Development Forum, a two-day event scheduled to conclude on May 29.

Speaking at the forum, Ms Boniphace noted that the adoption of digital systems would improve operational efficiency, enhance security and increase transparency in cooperative activities, while also helping to address fraud-related challenges that have emerged in some areas.

“As the cooperative sector continues to grow, the use of reliable digital systems is essential in safeguarding members’ resources and building trust among stakeholders,” she said.

In support of the initiative, the Chief Executive Officer of Climb Up Limited, Mr Emmanuel Ngallah, told participants that the company had attended the forum to provide technological solutions aimed at restoring confidence among cooperative members and the public.

He explained that the company specialises in modern technologies, including digital management systems and smart weighing scales, which are designed to improve accuracy, transparency and trust in business and cooperative operations.

Mr Ngallah added that the technologies would help cooperative societies reduce losses, strengthen record keeping and improve service delivery to members.

Some participants at the forum expressed satisfaction with the knowledge gained during the training sessions on digital systems and smart weighing technologies, saying the programme had broadened their understanding of how technology can improve day-to-day cooperative activities.

The Mwanza Regional Cooperative Development Forum has brought together various stakeholders in the cooperative sector to discuss innovative ways of adopting modern technologies in order to strengthen transparency, improve efficiency and promote sustainable development among cooperative societies in Tanzania.
