Tanzania To Churn $ 3.5 bn Annually From TPHPA’s Netted New Crop Export Markets

THE Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA) has successfully managed to acquire vast markets for at least nine strategic crops within different 14 countries overseas.

If exploited accordingly, the markets will enable Tanzania to annually collect a total of $ 3.5 billion.

The crops, and their market destination countries in brackets are vanilla, (China, Indonesia and  India), avocado  (Canada, Malaysia, South Africa, India, China, European Union countries and Israel.

Other crops include banana (South Africa), round potatoes (Zambia), coffee (China), soybeans (China), pineapple (China, India, Turkey and Brazil), cloves (Indonesia and Singapore), manga pepper  (Canada) cocoa (USA), whereby tobacco has attracted huge market in Iraq and Pakistan.

Prof Joseph Ndunguru, the TPHPA Director General (DG) informed the publication  that the development has been attained due to efforts by the state- owned authority to make Pest-Risk analysis (PRA) and phytosanitary measures in the country.

Moreover , he said TPHPA has also been working to  develop professional market access dossiers and dispatched them to different Embassies abroad.

“The dossiers, are part of the Strengthening Plant Health Services in Tanzania for Enhanced Food Safety (STREPHIT) project to allow exports to the European Union (EU) and international markets in collaboration with the EU and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO),” the Don detailed.

He added, between 2021/22 and 2023/24 fiscal period, the authority worked to assist the country to generate at least  $ 3.54 billion from exportation of 3.5 million tons of diverse economic cash crops onto international markets. 

Together with that, we have also secures a potential markets for the sunflower oil seed cakes in China,” 

“We’re continuing working round the clock in partnership with other relevant institutions to regulate, coordinate, and promote plant health and phytosanitary measures in the country,” he assured.

And due to empowerment of the export of various crops through the audit and control services of various border products over the past three years 2021-2023, TPHPA facilitated the export of 5.5 million tons of various crops, including vegetables, fruits, legumes, worth around  $ 6.6 billion, equivalent to 15.6trn/-.

To improve the authority’s capacity to contain effects of destructive birds and locusts towards plants and crops in the country, he said TPHPA has procured a 7bn/– worth special pesticides spraying jet.

The plane, Thrush 510P2+, has the tank capacity to carry a total of 1,930 liters of pesticides, and 863 liters of fuel, enough to operate on air for four consecutive hours without landing.

“Currently, the authority has a total of 21 drones for conducting effective surveys in farmers plantations with the purpose to determine the presence of diseases and pests,” he said .

In addition, Professor Ndunguru said the authority is in the process of purchasing 20 other drones, at a cost of 1.6bn/- .

The TPHPA is a state- owned agency with a mandate to regulate, coordinate, and promote plant health and phytosanitary measures in the country.
