DAR ES SALAAM. THE Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and the South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) are set to strengthen their cooperation in various tax matters, including combating tax evasion.
The two authorities held a meeting in Dar es Salaam, led by TRA Commissioner General, Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda and SSRA Commissioner General, Mr. William Anyuon Koul.
They discussed ways to enhance collaboration, particularly in controlling tax evasion through the ports of Tanga and Dar es Salaam, which are key entry points for goods destined for South Sudan.
Mr. Mwenda said South Sudan aims to utilize these ports more effectively and has requested a designated customs area to oversee their cargo.
To facilitate this, TRA and SSRA will develop a joint system to enable their systems to communicate, helping to control revenue and curb corruption.
The authorities also agreed to collaborate on capacity building for their staff, with plans to exchange experiences and expertise.
“We will finalize an agreement by the end of February for cooperation and capacity building, enhancing efficiency and experience sharing between our two authorities,” Mr. Mwenda said.
The cooperation is expected to boost trade between Tanzania and South Sudan, expanding TRA’s tax base and revenue collection. SSRA’s Koul welcomed the partnership, saying it would enable South Sudan to utilize the ports and control revenue leakage through interconnected systems.
The authorities aim to strengthen their partnership, promoting transparency and revenue growth for both countries.
