Implementation of the project aligns with Goal Four of the National Development Vision (NDV) 2050, which aims to build a digitally empowered society driven by innovation and competitiveness.
DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government is planning to construct a state-of-the-art digital technology institute in the capital city, Dodoma.
The facility, expected to cost up to $194.13 million (approximately 493bn/-), will help develop skilled professionals for the country’s digital sector.
The project, crucial for the transformation of Tanzania’s digital technology landscape, was announced by the Deputy Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Dr. Switbert Mkama.
He shared the plans while officiating the ministry’s first council meeting in Dodoma on behalf of Minister Angellah Kairuki.
Dr. Mkama noted that the government has completed land acquisition procedures for the project, adding that the Digital Technology Institute (DTI) campus will occupy 1,619,000 square metres in the Nala area, on the outskirts of Dodoma.
“The feasibility study for the institute has already been completed, and preparations are progressing well,” Dr. Mkama stated.
He further mentioned that the Ministry of Finance has submitted a request to the Exim Bank for a concessional loan of $167.36 million to finance construction.
Dr. Mkama urged ministry staff to work diligently to finalise the ICT and Postal Policy and to continue strengthening digital revenue systems such as Jamii Pay.
He highlighted that Jamii Pay is currently used to collect revenue at the Magufuli Mbezi Bus Terminal in Dar es Salaam, the Kigamboni Ferry, and football stadiums nationwide.
The project aligns with Goal Four of the National Development Vision (NDV) 2050, which aims to build a digitally empowered society driven by innovation and competitiveness.
Under this vision, Tanzania targets at least 70 percent digital literacy among citizens and aims for over 80 percent of government services to be accessible through secure digital platforms within the next 25 years.
