President Samia To Distribute 84 Fibre  Boats To Fishers, Seaweed Growers In Tanga Region

PRESIDENT Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan is expecting to handout a total of 84 modern fishing and fiber vessels to fishermen and seaweed growers in Tanga Region, being part of the initiative by the Government to stimulate blue economy in the region.

Dr. Batilda Burian, Tanga Reginal Commissioner (RC) said the crucial event will see  President Samia rolling out at least 34 modern fishing boats, as well as a total of 50 fibre boats to the seaweed farmers in the Coastal Region.

The RC observed that Tanga Region has been endowed with over 180km of Indian Ocean, enough to allow the Region to become the Tanzania’s hub for fishing and seaweed production, but the Region is yet to fully  benefiting from the prestigious blue economy opportunity due to several setbacks, including lack of modern facilities in the economic sector .

Dr Burian disclosed the key development in the blue economy corridor within the Region mapped in northeast Tanzania when giving an exclusive interview to this publication over the Region’s preparations to host the historical tour which has been scheduled to commence from 23rd February 2025.

“For instance”, Dr Burian said, majority of women in the Region are banking on seaweed production to meet their basic amenities, but unfortunately are faced with a number of setbacks due to absence of modern facilities.

She said rolling out of the seaweed boats will is projected to allow the women in the sector to execute their roles more professionally.

Apart from the said modern facilities, President Samia will use her eight -days  to dish out over 28,000  gas cylinder as part to propel use of safe and environmental- friendly cooking power,” she expressed.

A Fibre Boats 

Being the maiden visit to Tanga Region since Dr Samia ascended to power in March 2021, Dr Burian added, President Samia is expecting to visit and address the public in all eight districts of Tanga Region.

We’re very happy that President Samia has honour Tanga to the extent of visiting us for eight consecutive days, her visit will automatically stimulate diverse economic activities, as well as solving some setbacks that continue haunting the Region,” Dr Burian expressed.

The RC expressed that preparations ahead of the major visit was at good shape, urged the citizens in the region to make fruitful use of the event which is expecting to attract hundreds and thousands of people in the region.

Dr Burian expressed high optimism that the visit will help the Region to reclaim and revitalise all dormant factories .

“One of the top challenge that we’re facing here is presence of many factories experienced that decline in production following the collapse of the former East African Community (EAC) in 1977, which included Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda,” she observed.

She emphasised that Tanga was once an industrial hub, but the collapse of the East African Community in 1977 significantly contributed to the decline of many factories in the region, thus making it necessary for the sharp revival of the plants in order to rollback the economy of the region.

The Head of State will be in Tanga Region for eight- day visit, from 23rd February whereby among other, the Head of State is expecting to launch at least five major economic project, as well as visiting the whole right districts of Tanga region.
