Lake Tanganyika stands among the key local water bodies with the prestigious opportunity to practice fish farming

THE Government has said it will continue to implement useful strategies meant to strengthen and promote fish production, especially in the Lake Tanganyika.
The timely economic plans will see the establishment of fish farming projects, the vision behind being to further promote fish production as well as stimulating the relevant business in the country.

The plan was revealed by the Director of Department of Water Development in the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Dr. Nazael Madalla when gracing a special forum tailored to deliberate how best to strengthen water creatures, and fish production in the country.
Speaking on behalf of the Secretary -General of the Ministry of Livestock, Dr Madalla expressed that President Samia Suluhu Hassan directed the parent ministry to ensure that it encourages and continues to promote fish farming through all areas that are suitable for breeding.
” Lake Tanganyika stands among the key local water bodies with the prestigious opportunity to practice fish farming, and this forum attracts various fish farming stakeholders from within the country and abroad to discuss how best we can promote fish farming in the area,” he said.
Dr. Madalla added that the Government has been making a series of efforts to help promote the water industry.

“The Government through the parent ministry has also continuing to conduct several training to impart the fishermen with key knowledge on fish farming, “Dr Madalla added.
Moreover, Dr Madalla observed that the ongoing strategies also include ambitious efforts to mobilize the private sector to chip in and invest largely into the fish production sector in the country.
With the efforts already starting to fetch fruitful results following an encouraging spate of traders and fishermen to venture into fish farming, Dr. Madalla expressed high optimism that the Government’s set zeal and strategies to elevate the sector will see the light of the day.
Held in Dodoma Capital City, the forum brought together various stakeholders of the water industry from government and private institutions and stakeholders of Lake Tanganyika.
Speaking for her part, the Director of Fisheries from Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA), Ms. Nyakorema Beatrice Marwa said the timely forum will play meaningful role in fostering fish farming in Tanzania.

Lake Tanganyika is an African Great Lake. It is the second-largest freshwater lake by volume and the second deepest, in both cases after Lake Baikal in Siberia. The famous lake It is the world’s longest freshwater lake and the lake is shared among four countries—Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (the DRC), Burundi, and Zambia—with Tanzania (46%) and the DRC (40%) possessing the majority of the lake.
It drains via the Lukuga River into the Congo River system, which ultimately discharges at Banana, Democratic Republic of the Congo into the Atlantic Ocean.
