Mr. Zungu, who was the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly since 2022 ascended to the key post at the August House after collecting 378 votes, being out of a total of 383 votes that was casted by a total of 383 elect- Members of Parliament (MPs).
THE first sitting of Tanzania’s 13th Parliament commenced this afternoon in Dodoma Capital city, with a crucial agenda to elect a Speaker for the National Assembly, whereby Mr. Mussa Hassan Zungu has been elected to handle the key post.
Mr. Zungu, who was the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly since 2022 ascended to the key post at the August House after collecting 378 votes, being out of a total of 383 votes that was casted by a total of 383 elect- Members of Parliament (MPs).
Mr Zungu has became the 9th Speaker of the Parliament. Adam Sapi Mkwawa was the first Speaker, elected on 1962, followed by Erasto Andrew in 1975, Adam Sapi Mkwawa (1994), Pius Msekwa (2005), Samuel Sitta (2010), Anne Makinda (2015), Job Ndugai (2022), Dr. Tulia Ackson (October 2025).
Giving his brief remarks of thanks, Mr Zungu thanked the chairperson of the rulling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for trusting him to handle the key post.
Moreover, Mr. Zungu who doubles as the Legislator for Ilala Constituency showered praises to Dr. Tulia Ackson for mentoring him during a period of at least four years in which he worked with her.
Mr. Zungu pledged to handle the post with a spirit of patriotism and nationalism in order to ensure the National Assembly continues to operate for the sake of national development, peace and harmony, among others.
