MOROGORO. PARTICIPATION of the Samaria Women Group at the just concluded Nanenane 2025 exhibitions has equipped them with vital marketing skills.

The group was equally enabled to connect with farmers who provided valuable advice on product enhancement.

The exhibitions also attracted participants from several regions, including Tanga, Dar es Salaam, Coastal  and Morogoro, who showcased the benefits brought forth by both private companies and governmental institutions through education and product offerings.

The Samaria Women Group was empowered by training from the Tanzania Agriculture Research Institute (TARI) Kibaha and supported by the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) which focused on adding value to their tomato produce.

Recently, COSTECH has bankrolled a special training aimed at imparting the tomato growers and entrepreneurs in Kilosa district of Morogoro region with key technical knowledge to process the popular edible berry fruit.

The four-day agro-clinic, conducted in partnership with TARI Kibaha center and the Small Industries Development Organization (SIDO) brought together a total of 15 beneficiaries.

Held in Dumila town, Kilosa district, the crucial training was part of the ongoing project, christened ‘Reducing Post-Harvest Losses and Increasing Farmers’ Income Through Tomato Products’, which is being implemented by TARI Kibaha under financial auspicious from COSTECH.

This training sought to empower the participants on simple, but better tomato processing skills, as well as shaping their business management, according to Dr Mariam Mtunguja, the lead researcher and the coordinator of the project.

Dr Mtunguja stated that, since tomato is one of the short- time perishable crops, most of the farmers and sellers of the fruit often incur economic losses, thus a need to process it in their own shadow.

She added that, through the project, the state-owned agricultural institute determines to ensure the local tomato produce and sellers are benefiting from their executions, saying plans are afoot to extend the similar training to more areas.

It was after this training that the Samaria Women Group participated at the 2025 Nanenane exhibitions which served as a catalyst for practical learning, providing insights into the successful practices of fellow farmers and creating new opportunities.

Mr Juma Selemani, an entrepreneur from Morogoro, committed to purchasing their products for his supermarket, demonstrating the potential for commercial success.

As a tradition, this year saw a diverse array of stakeholders, including entrepreneurs and visitors from across Tanzania, gathering for the Nanenane exhibitions. Notably, the Samaria Women Group from Dumila Ward in Kilosa District was among the many who attended, eager to learn and showcase agricultural products.

At the exhibition, the Group presented a variety of products, including peppers and tomatoes. However, their standout product was dried tomatoes, which were processed into tomato powder, garnering favorable responses from numerous customers.

Reflecting on the benefits realized from participating in this year’s exhibition, Ms Martha Manyaku, the group’s coordinator, highlighted the significant business strategies they have learned, particularly in enhancing the value of tomatoes and peppers.

Meanwhile, Dr Maria Mtunguja expressed the renewed strength they have gained to continue supporting other women in the community following the positive outcomes achieved by the Samaria Women Group.
