Four Science Students Scoops Scholarships From Karimjee Foundation

AT LEAST four secondary school students in the field of science have successful received scholarship to join with advanced studies at various universities from Karimjee Foundation, bringing the number of students who have so far benefited from the East Africa’s diversified business group to 49.

Among the four fortunate students who scooped the scholarship in this year through Young Scientists Tanzania (YST) include Salha Shamimu and Ramlat Hamad from the Zanzibar-based Lumumba secondary school and Winfrida Haliyake and Ally Abdallah from Mitunduruni secondary school in Singida region.

Giving a press briefing pertaining to the development, head of marketing department at the Karimjee Foundation, Cobus Van Zyl said in this year alone, the Foundation has received around 1055 scholarship applications from different students across the country.

“And apart from rolling out scholarship to the four students, we have also managed to award Meda Iddi Omondi, and Mussa Jairosi Albert, the students from Sikirarini secondary school of Kilimanjaro region with at least 2.1 m/-, while others, including Erick Egidius Kweyunga and Aidan Mjuni Andrew from Kibaha secondary received a total of 1.2m/- for excelling in their exams,” he said.

He added the students who won the potential scholarship in this year comes from a total of 337 secondary schools that were lined-up and qualify to compete for the prestigious opportunity.

“The whole process for getting the qualified students for the scholarship was handled very professional and transparently. The four qualified students submitted their key innovative ideas in the science sector, the vital business ideas which was later scrutinized and finally greenlighted by the Karimjee Foundation in cooperation with Young Scientist of Tanzania (TYC),” he detailed.

He unveiled that for 200 years, the Karimjee family has upheld education and charity as fundamental pillars of it business ethos, added that, the Karimjee Foundation have been supporting numerous projects, including the construction of schools and hospitals, educational scholarships, community development initiatives, and the promotion of science, technology, and wildlife conservation.

“Since becoming the main sponsor of YST in 2011, when the competition attracted just four applications, we have seen remarkable growth. For instance, this year alone, 1055 applications were received from 337 schools across Tanzania, and to date, 49 students have received scholarships from the Karimjee Foundation,” he expressed.

Moreover, Van Zyl expressed optimism that through partnership with YST the Foundation will continue to inspire students to pursue careers in science and technology and encourage schools to support the platforms.

“We are particularly proud of the YST team for their tireless efforts in making this initiative a success, helping build scientific capacity across the country,” he observed.
