Indonesian President Jetts In Tanzania For A Day Visit

PRESIDENT of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, is in Tanzania for a- one day visit, being part of his African tour. 

Mr. Widodo commenced his tour in Kenya, and after Tanzania he’s scheduled to visit Mozambique, and South Africa.

Briefing over the visit,  the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East Africa Cooperation,  Dr. Stergomena Tax, expressed that as per the schedule the visitor will this afternoon (22 August, 2023) hold a fruitful meeting with his host, President Samia Suluhu Hassan. 



According to the Minister,  the two Heads of State will discuss and set viable strategies for expanding bilateral cooperation towards several key sectors. 

“Tanzania and Indonesia have good bilateral cooperation background in several aspects, and currently,  the vision is to expand our friendship, ” she expressed. 

However, the Ministry unveiled that the two countries are now mulling to open fresh cooperating chapter in new economic areas, especially the Agriculture and Fisheries sectors.

The visit is set to increase investment cooperation, health cooperation, development cooperation and exchange views on important regional and global issues.

Dr. Stagomena said the other sectors that the two countries expects to heighten investment cooperation include trade, education, the blue economy, tourism and immigration.

According to her, the countries will today sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on bilateral cooperation.

In 2004, the countries signed an MoU on the establishment of a joint commission, known as the Indonesia-Tanzania Joint Agriculture Cooperation Committee (JACC), which served as a vehicle to improve agricultural sector cooperation, such as capacity building through training, joint research and the expansion of market access to agricultural products.

This is President Widodo’s first visit to Tanzania and the continent, whose major aim is to boost relations with the country.

The last visit of an Indonesian President to Tanzania was 32 years ago on December 1991.

Tanzania’s exports to Indonesia include cloves, cotton, tobacco, cocoa, copper, and ground nuts, while Indonesia’s main exports to Tanzania are edible crude palm oil, machinery parts, chemical products, paper, and garments.
