The Government of Tanzania Vow To Safeguard The Country’s Traditions Against Any Negative Western Culture

Being the country’s native vernacular, on July 7th 2025, Tanzania will join other nations to celebrate World Kiswahili Language Day.

This day was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2021, recognizing Kiswahili’s global relevance as a language of communication and its cultural significance in Africa. 

DAR ES SALAAM. THE Government of Tanzania has vowed to protect the nation’s traditions and cultures, which currently faces a major threat of mass spread of western culture, propelled by rapid advancement of science and technology.

In his remarks to grace the 15th forum of the Cultural, Arts and Sports Development Officers in Tanzania, Prime Minister, Mr Kassim Majaliwa expressed that the Government will not allow negative western cultures to tarnish the dignity and humanity of the Tanzanians, under the pretext of human rights.

The Premier, who represented President Samia Suluhu Hassan in the key meeting, insisted over the need for increased awareness programs to help put the youth in the country far from embracing poor cultures from internet sources.

“The Sixth Phase Government, under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan will continue prioritizing and supporting these three sectors, Culture,  Arts and Sports in Tanzania,” he said.

Apart from injecting good share to the State coffer, Mr Majaliwa said the three sectors offer employment to hundreds of youth across the country.

“In order to propel smooth metamorphosis of the sectors, the Government has decided to establish the relevant departments in all councils across the country,” he unveiled.

In the same vein, the Premier ordered all councils to set aside enough budgets to ensure the sector’s departments implement a series of key interventions to promote sports, culture and sports activities.

Moreover, he directed the Regional Administrative Secretaries (RAS) to ensure the departments are manned by the most skilled and professional staff.

“The Government has established different colleges in Tanzania to mould experts in Sports, Arts and Culture fields, including Malya College, Bagamoyo College of Arts, Butimba Teacher’s College and the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), which offers training on Physical Education in Sports and Culture,” he said.

He called for collective interventions to help promote the sectors in Tanzania, saying culture represents national identity in the world.

Mr Majaliwa noted that, the Government will continue implementing helpful strategies to promote Kiswahili language, locally and globally.

He directed the parent ministry, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, to coordinate various programs to promote use of proper Kiswahili across  the country.

“Apart from the fact that Kiswahili is our native language, the majority of Tanzanians are using poor Kiswahili in their daily conversations,” he observed.

Speaking pertaining to sports, the Premier said the popular sector serves as the ‘Universal Language’.

“The Government will continue supporting all genres in the country’s sports sector to grow up big, …,” he ensured.

The forum, held this afternoon, Tuesday April 22, in Dar es Salaam Commercial City, attracted key officers and stakeholders in the three sectors, within and outside the country.

The annually – staged forum is a crucial platform to help the participants to deliberate on key areas for the betterment of the sectors.
