Mantra Tanzania In Five Year Project To Improve Economy, Social Services Delivery in Ruvuma

MANTRA Tanzania Ltd, the first company to grab a license for the extraction of uranium in Tanzania, has embarked on a robust program to uplift the availability and provisions of key social services in Ruvuma region.

To be executed in five consecutive years (2023-2028), the humanitarian project is part of the company’s commitment to attain it Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Speaking during a recently special tour of the Ruvuma regional and Namtumbo district offices, Mantra’s Managing Director, Aleksandr Ryabchenko, emphasized the importance of prioritizing social responsibility in the company’s operations.

He unveiled that the company was currenlty working to improve social services delivery towards the local communities in Ruvuma region, particularly across in the Namtumbo and Likuyu wards.

“The envisaged will focus to promote water accessibility and its supply chain, food and nutrition, education, healthcare, entertainment (sports and culture) and providing alternative livelihood by investing in sustainable projects that improve the socio-economic status of the region,” he unveiled. 

In more efforts to assure the country’s maiden uranium investment benefits the local communities,  he said so far, the company has partnered with local organizations to provide training and employment opportunities for the residents of the Namtumbo and Likuyu wards, contributing to the region’s economy and empowering the local communities.

“Mantra team has been holding meetings at the district, ward, and village levels to ensure the CSR investments align with the community’s needs,” he emphasized.

 Ryabchenko added, on April 6, 2023, he led a meeting with villagers from the three villages they’re operating, including Mtonya, Likuyu Seka, and Likuyu Mandela, to determine the areas where their investment would be most beneficial, and the company has started implantation of the agreed issues from the Likuyu ward.

Speaking for her part, the Namtumbo District Commissioner (DC) Ngollo Malenya, said that despite not starting production, Mantra has been annually committed over USD 100,000 to the District to help support implementation of numerous social projects, as part of its CSR.

“The company’s efforts to promote sustainable development are commendable and should serve as an example for other mining companies in Tanzania and across the continent ” the DC noted.

During the visit, the company has also donated a Chemical Analyzer Machine (CAM), worth around 30m/- to the Namtumbo District Hospital to aid its medical team in providing quality healthcare to patients.

The machine was presented to the District Commissioner during Ryabchenko’s visit to the District Commissioner’s office.

Mantra Tanzania Limited, a TENEX subsidiary company under the ROSATOM, is currently in the final stages of completing its construction of a pilot plant in Namtumbo and expects to commence pilot production before the end of this year. 
Mantra Tanzania Limited was granted a Special Mining License in April 2013.

 Despite postponing the project implementation timeline due to the global Uranium price weakening, the company has invested over USD 240,000,000 in the Mkuju River Project since discovering a significant world-class uranium deposit in 1996. 

Mantra Tanzania Limited’s commitment to social responsibility and sustainable development is a testament to its dedication to the local communities and the environment. 

The company’s investment in the Ruvuma region will undoubtedly positively impact the area and serve as an example for other mining companies looking to invest in Tanzania
