DODOMA. AFTER successfully serving farmers across all 26 mainland regions and districts, the renowned local agricultural company, ITRACOM Fertilizers Company Ltd is now planning to expand the reach of its organomineral fertilizers to every ward in the country.
This ambitious vision will be supported by a special campaign designed to raise farmers’ awareness about the importance of using organomineral fertilizers to increase productivity.
Since its inception, Itracom, situated on 46 acres in the Nala area on the outskirts of Dodoma, the nation’s capital, has been manufacturing high-quality fertilizers that have become a solution to soil fertility challenges across East Africa.
This success has attracted a large number of farmers from various agroecological zones.
Currently, Itracom operates 156 storage towers nationwide, along with several mini-production plants.
In an exclusive interview to the publication, Ms. Claudia Kimako, Director of Business Development and Marketing at Itracom, revealed that the company produced over 800,000 metric tons (MT) of fertilizer during the 2024/25 season.
“Our fertilizers has become the preferred choice for farmers nationwide due to their quality, blending natural nutrients with chemical components, all at affordable prices,” she said.
Ms. Kimako credited the government’s fertilizer subsidy scheme for enabling many smallholder farmers to access these products, significantly enhancing their production and productivity.

She added that the company uses well-organised farmers’ field days and demonstration plots not only to train farmers on proper fertilizers’ use but also to highlight the advantages of organomineral fertilizers.
Regarding marketing, Ms. Kimako explained that Itracom has formal contracts with numerous agro-dealers across the country.
“These agro-dealers are certified and registered by the Tanzania Fertilizer Regulatory Authority (TFRA), ensuring the distribution of genuine fertilizers and helping to eliminate counterfeit products,” she noted.
Since 2023, the company has been exporting fertilizers to Kenya, Burundi, and Uganda, with negotiations underway to expand exports to Malawi and other African countries, she added.
Meanwhile, Itracom’s Deputy Managing Director Dr. Joel Meliyo highlighted that before starting production, the company conducted extensive research, dissemination, and performance evaluations to ensure its fertilizers meet required standards.
“These initiatives were carried out in collaboration with key agricultural experts from the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), TFRA, universities, seed companies, and district councils,” he said.
Dr Meliyo also emphasised the importance of educating farmers nationwide about the benefits of fertilizer use in improving productivity.
Additionally, he urged the government to continue developing supportive funding programs for local fertilizer manufacturers to help meet the country’s annual demand.

“It would also be prudent for the government to consider reducing fertilizer imports to allow local factories to thrive,” he emphasized.
Organomineral fertilizers combine organic matter (cow dung) and locally available rocks (phosphate, dolomite/calcite and magnesite) with additives of mineral nutrients from Urea, diammonium phosphate (DAP) and Muriate of potash (MOP), offering balanced soil nutrition to boost crop yields.
