Gender equality means that the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of individuals will not depend on whether they are male or female, handicapped or able bodied, young or elderly, white or black, or from rural or urban settings.

The three-year project, christened ‘Tuinuke Pamoja’ will be implemented by two organizations, the Tanzania Gender Networking Programme (TGNP) and Aga Khan Foundation (AKF).

According to Mr. Nestory Mhando , the Manager of the Project,  the initiative will provide financial support to empower the registered gender-related community groups.

“Apart from providing financial assistance, the project will impart the groups with the necessary skills and awareness and thus, enable them to execute their interventions professionally, especially in helping to bring about needed gender equality within the targeted local communities in the region,” he said.

Together with that, Mr. Mhando added that among others, the project has also set to run an array of activities to link the beneficiary groups with the reputable organisations that deal with gender networking issues, child women and rights.

“The focus is to create a key podium for the groups to acquire useful experience and exchange from the high-profile organizations, the development which will automatically assist the groups to improve their operations towards ending gender inequalities,” he insisted.

With the support, he said the project targets to see the groups open and stage special forums  for allowing public dialogues, to help bring together the relevant government officials, development partners and the members of communities to delve on professional ways to curtal gender inequality issues within their respective communities.

Dwelling further over implementation of the project, he said during the first year, the project plans to spend a total of 2bn/-, whereby 50 percent of the amount will be injected to the targeted communities to support the groups that run diverse interventions on gender –related issues.

He said the remaining amount, at least 6bn/- will be injected to the beneficiary groups in the targeted communities during the second and the third year of the project’s implementation.

On her side, the project’s coordinator, Ms. Monica John, from TGNP said they have prepared to work in sync with the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) to ensure the initiative is being implemented effectively and professionally to reflect the value for money injected, but also to achieve the needed outcomes.
