Govt Unveils Strategy To Internationalize Tourist Attraction Destinations In Central Zone Circuit

DODOMA.THE government has embarked on a constructive strategy to standardize and further promote key tourism attraction sites that  Dodoma region has been endowed.

The strategy has been engineered by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism in sync with the Tanzania Forestry Services (TFS), the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) and key stakeholders from the private sector and it focuses on improving the status of the sites to international level.

The helpful development for the metamorphosis of the economic- leisure sector in the central zone circuit was unveiled by Ms. Dainess Kunzugala, Acting Assistant Director of Tourism Development in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.

She was speaking in the sideline of a special organized expedition at the Kondoa Irangi Rock paintings Site on September 27, 2025.

The expedition, dubbed ‘Nyama Choma Bata Pori, was organized collaboratively by the office of Dodoma Regional Commissioner, TFS, TTB and Epic Adventures Company to celebrate this year’s world tourism day (WTD) in the central zone.

Among others, Ms. Kunzugala said the strategy seeks to ensure the tourism sites in the region are meeting the set five touristic prerequisites.

“These include construction of modern road infrastructures to improve accessibility, erection of ultra- modern hotels, at least from three- star hotels and above, availability of key tourist and social services, as well as diversified touristic products,” she unveiled.

To achieve this, the Director said the government was working to attract potential investors to chip- in and install the said facilities at the sites.

The sites under the strategy include Mkungunero and Swagaswaga Game Reserves, and the Kondoa Irangi Rock Paintings Site, according to her.

“Being the country’s Capital City, Dodoma is currently welcoming a high number of visitors from diverse sectors, including convening of diverse national and international conferences hence the need to promote the tourism sector,” she insisted.

She detailed, this year’s world tourism day theme, ‘Tourism and Sustainable Transformation’ fuels efforts by the sixth phase government in ensuring the sector brings about positive impacts to the nation, as well as individual citizens.

“We’re working to see the sector bring sustainable transformation in the national economy, citizen’s income, and the environment across the country,” she added.

 She hailed President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s concerted efforts to improve performance of the sector, observing that the initiative has fetched fruitful results.

For his part, Mr. Mathew Kiondo, Senior Assistant Commissioner, the Tanzania Forestry Services (TFS) in central zone, said the state- owned agency was implementing a series of initiatives to improve tourists service facilities at the Kondoa- based world heritage site.

“Kondoa Irangi Paintings stands among four tourist attraction sites located in Dodoma region, together with Mountain Hanang, Swagaswaga and Mkungunero Game Reserves, that TFS is working round the clock to promote,” he said.

With improved transportation services to, and from the region, including the cloud- connected Standard Gauge Electronic Railway line (SGR) and the envisaged Msalato International Airport, he said the future of tourism in the central circuit is heading towards successive periods.

“Apart from being endowed with the eye- catching touristic packages, some of these sites also harbor forest reserves, and TFS has a role and mandate to monitor and ensure for smooth development and preservation of the forests,” Mr.Kiondo insisted.

In further efforts to improve tourism activity in the central zone circuit, the TTB has launched a program to promote the Dodoma- based attraction inside and outside the country.

TTB Senior Tourism Officer, Mr. George Mwagane said the timely program aims to ensure the region receives tourist traffic in the near future.

For his part, Kondoa Irangi Rock Painting Site Manager, Mr. Zuberi Mabie expressed that Tanzania’s renowned world heritage site mapped in Kondoa District, Dodoma region has attracted a total of 6,228 tourists in the period between July 2024 and June 2025.

He detailed, during 2018 the area received a total of 1, 287 domestic visitors, while in 2020 and 2021 the visitors were 2,142 and 3,335 respectively.

“During 2022 we received domestic visitors at a tune of 4,763, in 2023 the visitor’s trend shot to 6,229, whereby in 2024 we welcomed at least 7,654 tourists at the site,” he expressed. 

Dwelling on international tourists, the Manager said in 2018 the number stood at 664, whereby during 2020 and 2021 the visitors from outside the country were 171 and 243 respectively.

“During 2022 we received at least 428 visitors from abroad, whereby during 2023 the site received a total of 671 from outside the country, and in 2024 the number of foreign visitors at the site increased to 541,” according to him.

He attributed the impressive records in the increased number of visitors at the site to efforts by the government to invest high in the site with an eye to ensure the natural and historical touristic resources at the area are utilized to their maximum breadth.

This year’s theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”, organised by UN Tourism, reflects the growing need to rethink the sector in light of global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and digitalisation.

The official celebration was hosted in Melaka, Malaysia, where the World Tourism Conference took take place from 27 to 29 September. At least four European initiatives have already been confirmed, ranging from workshops and forums to cultural activities. The programme included sessions on inclusive tourism, AI and innovation, and sustainable investment, bringing together policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders to explore how the sector can evolve to better serve people and the planet.
