By December 2024, the country is expected to have a total of eight CNG stations, with three new stations added to the existing five,” Deputy Minister for Energy, Ms Judith Kapinga told the Parliament.

TANZANIA has announced plans to concentrate serious efforts to expand its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure, including plan to open three new filling stations by December 2024.

The government’s move comes as more and more Tanzanians are opting to convert their vehicles to CNG, attracted by its lower cost and environmental benefits. With the number of CNG-powered vehicles on the rise, the demand for more fueling stations has also increased.

Deputy Minister for Energy, Judith Kapinga, said in Parliament on Thursday that the government, in collaboration with the private sector, aims to increase the number of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling stations nationwide.

“By December 2024, the country is expected to have a total of eight CNG stations, with three new stations added to the existing five,” Deputy Minister for Energy, Judith Kapinga told the Parliament.

She was responding to Donge Legislator, Soud Mohammed Jumah (CCM) who wanted to know the government’s plan to widen chances of having CNG centres countrywide.

“Also, we plan to inaugurate 13 more stations (two large stations, six mobile stations and five small stations) and all these stations will be available by 2025,’’ said Ms Kapinga.

Experts highlight the benefits as including the fact that CNG is referred to as a “green fuel” because it does not contain lead or sulphur.

Its properties also make it a safer. It has a high auto ignition temperature; operational costs are low compared to other fuels; it allows dual facility, and it helps in increasing the life of oils.

By investing in CNG, Tanzania has much more to gain economically, socially and environmentally.
