Flightlink To Start International Flights Directly From Arusha Airport
The timely development is projected to stimulate tourism activities in the country’s Northern Circuit
DAR ES SALAAM. Flightlink limited, an airline based in the city of Dar es Salaam, is expecting to start running international flights to various neighbouring countries straight from Arusha airport, with effect from June this year.
The Director General of Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA), Mr Abdul Athumani Mombokaleo told ‘Sematvweb’ in an interview that the crucial development is projected to stimulate tourism activities in the country’s northern circuit.
He added that the development has been attained following efforts by the Sixth Phase Government to facelift infrastructures and services delivery at the Arusha airport in order to cater for international passengers.
“Arusha airport , the Tanzania’s mainland second airstrip for serving many flights, which currently caters for 400,000 passengers annually was not capable to directly receive international passengers from abroad due to shortage of some necessary services at the facility, whereby it operations was based on 12 hours of a daylight,” he said.
To that end, the director said director said the government decided to initiate several projects to improve infrastructure status at the aerodrome.
Flightlink Limited, is an airline based in the city of Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania. The airline offers scheduled flight services to the primary tourism and business centres across the country.
These, according to him, include construction of ultra – modern terminal building and extension of running ways to the tune of 200 meters, making it capable and ready to accommodate larger planes, including Bombardier Q400 and ATR 72.
“Currently we’re working to finalize some key projects sush as installation of aviation lights, whereby the government has dished out 11bn/- for the purpose,”
He added that he government through TAA has decided to implement this project at the wake of increased number of tourists traffic, triggered by filming of Tanzania, The Royal Tour.
With 90 percent of passengers using the airport being tourists, he said the government realized over the need to improve services at the airfield.
” This project will stimulate business and transportations in Arusha City, including International business, transportation of goods and services, but also, it will help to attract more investments onto aviation and tourism sectors,” he noted.
He said upon completion the constructive project will also assist airplane companies to reduce costs of their operations.
Director Mombokaleo insisted that the neighborhood Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) will continue to serve international passengers as usual, saying the vast airport plays key role to promote tourism in Tanzania, with many tourist jetting in the country to visit attractions at Mount Kilimanjaro.
He assured that TAA, the state- owned authority responsible for the provision of airport services, ground support, infrastructure and construction of airports in Tanzania will continue upgrading infrastructures and services at all airport across the country as per availability of funds, and priority.
Located at Olasiti ward of the city of Arusha, the airport of Arusha stand third for serving many passengers in Tanzania Mainland, after JNIA, and KIA.
Flightlink Limited is a Tanzanian airline serving major tourist and business destinations on daily scheduled flights to Dar Es Salaam, Zanzibar, Arusha, Pemba, Mombasa and the Serengeti.
