At Total Of 1,306 Livestock Vaccinated In Kilimanjaro Region

KILIMANJARO. AT LEAST 1,306 livestock in Kilimanjaro region have been vaccinated, being out of a total of 3,405,500 that are targeted for vital vaccination in the region mapped in the northeastern Tanzania, just south of the equator.
The ongoing National Livestock Vaccination and Identification Strategy (2024-2029) which was launched by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan on June 16st, 2025 at the Nyakabindi grounds, Bariadi district in Simiyu region aims to vaccinate 70 percent of livestock population across the country.
Speaking during official inception of the exercise in the region, District Commissioner (DC) for Moshi District, Mr. Godfrey Mnzava said a total of 492,700 cows are set for vaccination, as well as 1,212,800 sheeps and 1,700,000 chickens.
He appelled to the livestock farmers in the region to cooperate with the strategy by turning out in great number to have their livestock vaccinated.
“So I urge pastoralists to come out in large numbers to achieve this exercise which aims to ensure livestock are protected against diseases as vaccines are investment and not costly,” he challenged.
He expressed to have been impressed with the patriotic manner to which the livestock keepers in the region are positively responding to the excercise.
“This strategy has been hatched by the government to help strengthening production and productivity the livestock sector in Tanzania, the development which will automatically boosting mushrooming of relevant industries, livestock produce trades within and outside the country,” he insisted.
He added, the robust program is being rolled out in tandem with identification of livestock, focusing to propel modern livestock keeping among the farmers.
He extended appreciation to President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for financing the program, together with injecting high investment in needed equipment, apart from the highly- costing vaccines.
Moreover, Mr. Mnzava challenged the veterinarians involved in the exercise across the region to create awareness on the important of the vaccines.
On his side, Acting Registrar of the Veterinarian Council of Tanzania (VCT), Dr. Obed Nyasebwa, said livestock contributes very little to Tanzania’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), saying the poo trend is attributed to prevalamce of diseases in the economic sector.
To this end, he said President Samia Suluhu Hassan has decided to finance the strategy by allocating a large budget for livestock vaccines.
Countrywide, the strategy seek to vaccinate a total of 19,097,223 cows against the contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP).
Moreover, at least 20, 900,000 goats and sheeps will be vaccinated against the peste des petits ruminants (PPR), an acute or subacute viral disease of goats and sheep characterized by fever.
Together with that, the poultry sector will also be impacted, whereby a total of 40,000,000 local chickens will receive a special vaccination against the virulent Newcastle Disease (ND).
Though this strategy, the government is targeting to expand meat exportation level to 30,000 tons by 2029, from the currently 14,000 tons, the development which will enable the sector to fetch a total of USD 152,287,305.2, being from the currently USD 51, 894, 622,” she expressed.
During the 2024-25 fiscal year the government has set aside at least 28.1bn/- as a preliminary budget to support implementation of the first phase of the national vaccination strategy.
