AGRA Team Visits TARI Dakawa To Assess Progress Of Project For Improved Rice KernelsÂ
👉 The project focuses on developing, evaluating, and producing Early Generation Seeds (EGS) of drought- and salinity-tolerant rice varieties to strengthen food security and enhance climate resilience among smallholder farmers in Tanzania.
MOROGORO. A DELEGATION from the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) has visited the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), Dakawa Centre, with an eye to review progress of the AGRA -funded project implemented by TARI Dakawa.
The project focuses on developing, evaluating, and producing Early Generation Seeds (EGS) of drought- and salinity-tolerant rice varieties to strengthen food security and enhance climate resilience among smallholder farmers in Tanzania.
The timely visit held on 10 September 2025 was focusing to assess implementation status of the robust project, challenges as well as tracking the overall progress across project sites.
A delegation of agricultural pundits from AGRA was led by Dr. Peter Okoth Mbogo, a Seed Sector Development Specialist, and Mr. Japhet Laiza, Program Officer, as well as Mr. John B. Mapunda, Data Specialist.
Upon arrival, the team was welcomed by Ms. Fabiola Langa (Acting Center Manager), Dr. William Suvi (CRI), Dr Charles Chuwa, (Plant pathologist) and other staff members, they received a briefing on project activities and latter toured a field trial of drought-tolerant rice under evaluation at Dakawa.
During the visit, Dr. Mbogo commended the progress made and urged the project team to mainstream gender and youth inclusion across the rice value chain, particularly in employment and opportunity creation.
