ActionAid Tanzania has launched a constructive project aiming to empower the women community in Chamwino district, Dodoma region to get their statutory rights in land ownership.
Implementation of the program crop- up at the wake of a spate of discrimination of women in land ownership within the fast- growing district, propelled by the existence of masculinity tradition.
Speaking during launching of the initiative, the project’s coordinator from ActionAid Tanzania, Ms Happy Itros said the project is being implemented through the Transformative Impact Fund (TIF).
She informed that the project is also taking shape in Rwanda, Burundi and DRC- Kongo for the similar vision.
âIn Tanzania, this project runs in two regions of Singida and Dodoma, whereby in Dodoma, it works to impart a total of ten villages in Chamwino district, including Mlowa Barabarani, Mloda, Nzali, Kawawa, Msanga, Iringa Mvumi, Makang’wa, Chinangali II, Chamwino na Mahama,” she informed.
She observed, in Chamwino district there exists some negative notions and stances against women involvement in land ownership, a sad move which thwarted economic development towards the women’s communities.
“In many areas of the country, experience proves that there are still communities with foster negative attitudes about women owning land, the situation which deprives women of the opportunity to own land as it is for men,” she insisted.
To that end, she said the project will mobilize the community and provide education to overcome these negative attitudes in order to provide equal opportunities to women and men.
Together with that, she also said that the project aims to create key podiums for the farmers to raise their voices in pertaining to the diverse challenges they’re facing, as well as analyzing various policies and plans that will contribute to ecological agriculture.
For his part, ActionAid Tanzania Coordinator, Mr Samwel Mesiak said the reason why women do not own land in most parts of Tanzania includes poor traditions and customs, as well as false beliefs that existed since the times of ancestors.
“Our campaign focuses on empowering women to possess lands, but also to advocate for gender parity through spearheading war against all forms of gender violence,” he explained.
Speaking on behalf of the women of Mloda Village, the Accountant of the Small Women Farmers’ Forum in Chamwino District (JUWACHA) Nuru Mpanda hailed ActionAid Tanzania for implementing the initiative, saying that both, women and men have the right to own land.
